Rock 'n' roll gave teens a chance to "declare their independence
The first rock concert was held at Cleveland Arena on March 21, 1952. Thirty thousand teens packed into a building meant for ten thousand.
The phrase rock 'n' roll was a slang term in certain black communities referring to sexual intercourse.
This style of music was a big contrast to jazz music. Jazz focused on on brass instruments but rock 'n' roll emphasized the electric guitar and drums.
It became very popular to those between the ages of 12 an
d 21 because this type of music celebrated the teenage years.
The movement of southerners to cities in the upper South and North (during and after the war) made this type of music possible.
The movement brought different musical traditions together to make a new sound.
