  • Rock 'n' roll gave teens a chance to "declare their independence

  • The first rock concert was held at Cleveland Arena on March 21, 1952. Thirty thousand teens packed into a building meant for ten thousand.

  • The phrase rock 'n' roll was a slang term in certain black communities referring to sexual intercourse.

  • This style of music was a big contrast to jazz music. Jazz focused on on brass instruments but rock 'n' roll emphasized the electric guitar and drums.

  • It became very popular to those between the ages of 12 an d 21 because this type of music celebrated the teenage years.

  • The movement of southerners to cities in the upper South and North (during and after the war) made this type of music possible.

  • The movement brought different musical traditions together to make a new sound.
